In the late 1800s, Pearland was known for its prairies. Most residents harvested fruits and vegetables, including cantaloupes, corn, figs, pears, and watermelons. Pearland was promoted by the Allision and Richey Land Company developers as a sort of "agricultural Edan" and named the first subdivision "Suburban Gardens." Starting in the 1970s, Pearland experienced enormous growth, and by 1990 the city limits had extended to Harris County with a ton of housing developments and a thriving downtown area. Several colleges and universities are located around the area, including Alvin Community College and the University of Houston-Clear Lake!
